Finding something dead under the house can be a hectic task to clean up when you are not used to going into that area that often. Opossums are likely to be found camping under the house and when you go for scheduled cleaning and maintenance purposes, you might find one or two of them dead. The reasons and consequences could be long but mostly, nature plays its role in bringing death to them and that is how it works. You will find female opossums more often looking for food and other stuff for their younger ones under the house and making it their territory.
In wild, such creatures do not have much options to live. Either kill, evolve or if you cannot do any of those, get killed by some other predator and be an evening meal to the kids. However, most likely if you find them under your house, it will be in search of food or shelter both.
Something Infected Them
Now, there could be many poisonous and infected areas down there and messing around under a house could be a tough job. You could easily get infected by leftovers and remains of anything present down there or get hurt too.
Killed By a Larger Predator
Although, Opossums are quick and fast, they sometimes fall prey to large predators that are bigger, quicker & faster for sure. In search of food, the predators will not have second thoughts to defeat by killing. Since there is no guarantee that their territory cannot be taken over, it is a case of time that they face new competitors in the area and no one likes intrusion and involvement hence the death. Opossums like to feed on cockroaches, snails, rats, mice and anything that they find in your backyard.
